Ju De Paula

Ju De Paula is an interior designer that I came across while watching a show called “Interior Design Masters”.

De Paula incorporates a lot of bright Brazilian influences into her designs always leaving a room feel bright and energized.

Her designs leave me feeling happy and refreshed, which is something I would like to strive for with my future projects. Here is a link to her website “blueberry living co.”

Frank Stella

Frank Stella, Harran II

Frank Stella is an artist based in New York City and known for his paintings, sculptures, prints and architecture. I really enjoy the bright colors he uses in contrast with minimalistic forms and shapes.

Frank Stella, Empress of India II

I used one of his prints, shown above, titled “Empress of India II” in my animation project. You can check out more of his work here.

Class Action

This is the group I work with and have mentioned in class.

Class Action is a graphic design collective that creates visual messages to advocate social change. The group’s goal is to influence the way public issues are understood and to motivate audiences to participate in civic dialogue. The designers of Class Action initiated, wrote, designed and published these projects collaboratively.

Video Tutorial and Exercise

You will be documenting your Project 4 intervention by producing a short video. You can use a good quality phone camera, DSLR or other source to record. This tutorial is an introduction to editing with Adobe Premiere. Please view – we’ll have an exercise in editing during Tuesday’s class.

Premiere-tutorial-notes

Additional Adobe Premiere tutorials are here and below.

In-class for Tuesday, December 3: working with your partners, spend 10 minutes planning, 15 minutes shooting and an hour to edit, and produce a short video (with sound) on the theme: ‘tiny monuments.’

Tiny Monuments

For this in-class exercise – you will take a sheet of paper and create a folded miniature monument to something of your choice. Using this tiny monument you and your group will create a short film, outside the classroom in an ‘appropriate’ environment.

10 Minutes: Come up with a tiny monument and build it
15 Minutes: Film it in its environment
60 Minutes: Edit Film and upload to Course Folder
10 Minutes: Screen Films at 3:45p

Fearless Girl

The Charging Bull in Manhattan was by itself an illegal, unexpected art installment that quickly gained traction. But on March 7th, 2017, another statue was suddenly, but legally, placed in front of Charging Bull – a young, “fearless girl”, in anticipation of International Women’s Day. Sculpted by Kristen Visbal, it immediately provoked reactions from various media figures and the general populace. It was a hit among tourists, with tourists gathering to see it, and political pundits applauded its symbolic importance. The sculptor of Charging Bull, Arturo Di Modica, complained to city officials that it twisted the positive intent of his sculpture. Some also voiced concerns surrounding the origins of the sculpture, since it was commissioned by an investment management firm, State Street Global Advisors, to promote a new “gender-diverse” index fund.

Regardless, I thought that it was very interesting to see how an installment of a sculpture next to another one could alter its meaning. I saw this article from the DP which describes a similar scenario here at Penn: https://www.thedp.com/article/2018/12/ben-franklin-statue-art-installation-upenn-socioeconomic

Iris van Herpen

Piece from van Herpen’s Hypnosis collection (July 2019)

I recently saw Iris van Herpen’s work online, and it reminded me of some of the concepts we explored in Project 3. Van Herpen is a Dutch fashion designer that focuses on invention, sculpture, and movement in her pieces. She has pushed the boundaries in fashion and art by combining traditional Couture techniques with unconventional materials such as 3D printing. This unique combination lends itself to many sculptural, visually-interesting pieces inspired by a variety of topics–some of which include architecture and science. Van Herpen is also well-known for her use of movement in her pieces. She takes a traditionally rigid medium (3D printed plastics) and transforms it into a lively material.

Both of these concepts–sculpture and movement–are further explored through van Herpen’s collaborations. Instead of sticking to a single discipline, van Herpen works with a variety of different people in order to develop inventive collections that explore the relationships between fashion, art, and any other field imaginable.

For more information on van Herpen, watch this video.

Banksy

Banksy Girl and Heart Balloon (2840632113).jpg

Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist based in England whose stenciled, primarily black-and-white works of social commentary have gained worldwide renown. At the same time, many critics argue that any commentary in the graffiti artworks are usually a very obvious truth in the world, and that they are only superficially deep.

I felt that Banksy was perhaps one of the most well-known artists today that thrive off of an illegal act. His vandalism of public places to attract attention is closely related with Project 4, so I thought it was worth sharing.

Proj 3 Summary Page

To finish Project 3, submit color corrected, low res photos of your wearable from our runway show and design one or two tabloid low res PDF pages that show wearable, code, data and drawing code produced – like these and below – and post to the Course Folder titled * Project 3 summary page and photos.

Here are a few tutorials to help with editing wearable photos (raw and Photoshop) and a sample edit of a particular image with Curves and Quick Selection. If using a jpg image try editing with the Camera Raw Filter – Filters>Camera Raw.
