Mattress Performance

In September 2014, visual arts student Emma Sulkowicz, then a senior at Columbia University, picked up a dorm mattress, and moved it with them as they went about their daily life. They would ultimately carry it until their graduation ceremony in May 2015. An endurance art project, they hoped to bring attention to an alleged rape that had occurred to them 3 years prior. The media quickly picked up on the project, and was the target of intense scrutiny. Many art critics praised it for its boldness and conspicuous nature, and various political pundits similarly applauded it for its critique of rape culture. It was also sharply criticized, as a number of columnists felt that it was unfair to their alleged rapist, calling it “shaming without proof”. Some commentators also questioned its validity as art. Regardless, I was reminded of this endurance art piece when looking over Project 4, since it similarly takes place on a campus to bring attention to something.

The Story of Processing

Since this software is the foundation of our current project I thought it might be interesting to learn more about it. Processing was developed by MIT Media Lab members Casey Reas and Ben Fry. The two set out in order to develop a software that would be able to teach non programmers programming basics in a visual and artistic way.

The software is backed by something called the Processing Foundation, which was developed in 2012. In its mission statement the Processing Foundation claims to work towards promoting software literacy and to “empower people of all interests and backgrounds to learn how to program and make creative work with code, especially those who might not otherwise have access to these tools and resources.” The foundation organizes fellowship programs to bring research opportunities to artists, and supports multiple advocacy programs to seek out groups that are less likely to have access to the fields of technology, code, and art, and to work with these groups of people to bring them into these fields of work and study.

I had no idea so much went into this user friendly software and I am now even happier to be using it. Fun fact: when the company was first developed, the domain name processing was taken so the original URL was proce55ing.net!

Tyler Hobbs

I just found this artist while looking for ways to create certain textures in Processing. Tyler Hobbs creates all of his work digitally with custom computer programs. His focus is on the relation between randomness and order and he draws inspiration from naturally occurring patterns. He creates algorithms based on the natural world that are meant to invoke different sensations. His website is linked here it is really cool I definitely recommend looking at more of his work. https://tylerxhobbs.com/bio

Devo

Devo was a popular new wave band in the 1980’s known for many things, but I thought their interesting costumes would be a fine example for our upcoming wearables project. Though Devo’s wearables are less textured then the designs we might be creating ourselves, the shapes of their masks and hats are inspiring nonetheless.
